Culture in Mexico: The sea deity in Tamiahua, Veracruz, Gulf of Mexico.

Like usually every may 19th, the fisherman´s, tour operators guild and general town pilgrimage happens in "La barra de corazones" communnity, this little village at the border betwen Tamiahua centre and the sea, usually called just "La Barra", village community with strong roots in fishing and sea.

This festiviy has like principal objective an unusual thanksgiving to sea deity or "Patrono del mar", who guide this fishermans and sea turist operators with health and no injuries in their returno to home after long journeys in the sea, some fishermans stay for 24 or 48 hours fishin in the open sea just for go home with money for their family. Is totally interesting pay attention on how this festiviy happens: All, or near to all boats in Tamiahua, are decorated for celebrate and say "thanks", also, one, two o maximum three boats have a traditional music band playing live while are sailling in the middle of the Tamiahua´s Lagoon. Is a party in boats!! The community is sailling in another boats that are following the principal boat: the best and beautiful boat, with the better decoration and more space for the sea deity and the king and queen of the "La barra". One women and men selected for their support and help to benefit social causes in La Barra.

When this festivity begins?

Before of anything, we have clarify the Tamiahua´s and La barra geography:

La barra, or "La Barra de corazones" on the map image, is totally isolated by the sea, you Can´t go to La barra by land, just by boat or walking across one unique and just for people bridge, and make sense: the people of La barra lives with the sea in entire life.

And this is not all, for La barra people, the most common job is fishing, also, the unique way to go out from La barra to the sea is by "La escollera": one of top three most agressive breakwaters in the gulf of México, so, "La escollera" have in their history a lot of fisher sinkings, who can make nothing Vs. "La escollera" in a bad or changing weather day, and in this part of the gulf is so common.

For all of this reasons, the sea deity exist, to give hope and feith to the fishermsn in their really risky job, and, like you know, in México, the dead, and life, needs party.
